Weekly Update 2-25-20

Hello Fourth Grade Families,
Thank you for all of the lovely notes and treats this week. I feel so lucky to teach at Wealthy where the parents and kids are always appreciative. You are the best!
I am looking forward to meeting with you during Parent/Teacher conferences in March. If you have not signed up, please do so using Skyward. I have so many wonderful things to share!

Tomorrow we begin our unit on multiplying fractions. Some students struggled with adding and subtracting fractions, so this upcoming work may be a challenge. It is so helpful to work on nightly homework to ensure that your child understands what is happening in class. To help with this, I will be posting the homework for each week on the class blog. Your fourth grader is expected to write this in his/her planner each day. If they happen to miss, just check the blog. If your student is struggling with a homework assignment, please jot a note to me and I will work with your child in class.

This week's homework is:
Monday 2/24- IXL S.1, read for 30 min, bring library books for Tuesday!
Tuesday 2/25- No math homework, MAP test, read for 30 min
Wednesday 2/26- Math 8.1, read for 30 min
Thursday 2/27- Math 8.2, read for 30 min
Friday 2/28- Math 8.3, read for 30 min, yearbook pictures

Next week's homework:
Monday 3/2- Math 8.4, read around Michigan, bring library books for Tuesday!
Tuesday 3/3- Math 8.5, read around Michigan
Wednesday 3/4- Chapter review/study guide, read around Michigan
Thursday 3/5- Chapter review/study guide, read around Michigan, Lucky Charms and read celebration!
Friday 3/6- Chapter 8 test, no homework, read for 30 min

I can't believe next week is already March. This year is truly flying. We will ring in the new month by celebrating March is Reading Month with a bunch of really fun events. Your 4th grader is going to be asked to "Read Around Michigan". Each student will be given a Michigan Travel Guide on which to record the minutes that she/he spends reading at home. In the travel guide there are sixteen pages – one for each of the cities in our program.  Students are encouraged to accumulate minutes equal to the mileage between each stop.
We will be making cars for them to use to travel to different cities. After your child has completed a city, sign their page and then they can move. We will begin in Detroit and hopefully end up back in East Grand Rapids. For each city reached, the students will be given a raffle ticket and we will have drawings every Friday. If you would like to donate a small prize for our treasure box, we would appreciate it. Examples of prizes include dollar store items, school supplies, and BOOKS! I would also take donations of Lucky Charms and hot cocoa for the celebrations.
We will be keeping track of mileage at school. Students should keep their passbooks in their planner or homework folder.  We will be setting class goals with rewards for reaching them (see activity days below). We will end with a reading celebration at the end of the month when we go to Celebration Cinema to see an IMAX movie on April 2 at 9:30 am. More information will be sent home soon about this field trip.

March is Reading Month Special Activity Days (subject to change)
Battle Creek: Cereal and Read Day - March 5
Lansing/Grand Rapids: Sports Jersey/Hat Day - March 9
Cadillac: Hot cocoa and Read Day - March 11
Traverse City/Petoskey: Book Character Day - March 13
Hartwick Pines: Lumberjack Day - March 18
St. Ignace: No Homework, Just Read - March 19
Sault Ste. Marie: Game Day - March 20
Munising: Special Activity Time - March 24
Marquette/Houghton: Extra Recess - March 25
Ironwood/Iron River: Gym Time - March 27
Escanaba: Computer Time - March 31
Call of the Wild: Stuffed Animal and Read - April 1
East Grand Rapids: IMAX Movie - April 2
TL;DR: Your child will read minutes that we will convert to miles during the month of March. You will be asked to sign their book to confirm they've read for that many minutes. This booklet will go between home and school each night. We will have several reward days in school to celebrate the students' hard work. We would love prize box donations, 4 boxes of Lucky Charms, and hot cocoa.

I hope you have a great week!

Weekly Update 2-20-20

Hello Fourth Grade Families,
I hope you've all had a great week! Thank you to all who helped with our Valentine's Day party last Friday. A great time was had by all! Find pictures from the party on our class blog (staceygoodman.blogspot.com). It is hard to believe that was our last party of the year. Time flies when you're having fun in fourth grade!

Thank you to all who volunteered to chaperone on our field trip to Mackinac Island. You should have received communication about the lottery on Friday evening. Please let me know if you haven't. If you were selected to be a chaperone and have not confirmed with me via email, please do so by March 6th. We have many parents who would love to take your place if plans have changed!

If your family has had a turn with the Flat Wizard, please send me the picture! I have just loved seeing all of the things the kids are doing to put love into their hearts of your families. Here is the link to view the pictures I've received thus far:

Next Tuesday we will be taking our MAP math assessment in the afternoon. This will conclude MAP testing for fourth grade students.

The Scholastic Book Fair will be visiting Wealthy this year March 8-12th! We will shop as a class during our library time (Tues 2:30-3:00).

Enjoy the rest of this short week!
