Weekend News 3-24-17

Hello Second Grade Families,

I hope you've had a nice week. Thank you to everyone who came out for conferences last night. I look forward to meeting with the rest of you next week.

On Thursday we will celebrate with TEAM 2 by having a beach day! Please wear your most beach-y clothing to school (no swimsuits please!) and feel free to bring accessories like hats, towels, sunglasses, and whatever else you think would fit the theme!

I hope you all have a wonderful spring break! Safe travels to those of you going somewhere. No school March 31-April 9. School resumes on Monday April 10th.

When we return, we will be headed to our last field trip of second grade. On Thursday April 13th we will head to the Grand Rapids Public Museum. We plan to leave Wealthy around 12:25. Our tour begins at 12:45. We will visit other exhibits following our tour. We plan to leave the museum around 2:45 to return to Wealthy. Please contact Beth if you're able to drive and chaperone!

Next week we will have two sessions with local author Alan St. Jean. We will be participating in the Writing Olympics. The kids enjoyed an assembly to meet the author today.

This week in second grade:

In reading we created newspapers in our reading goal groups and presented the information we learned from our latest unit of study. Students presented their publications to the class and did an awesome job! We read tall tales and learned about the four characteristics that most tall tales have. Ask your child to tell you about this!

In writing we expressed our opinions by writing reviews on various topics.

In math we measured objects around us using the metric system.

In social studies we learned how people use our environment.

I hope you have a great first weekend of spring!

Weekend News 3-17-17 Happy St. Patrick's Day!

Hello Second Grade Families,

I hope you're having a lucky day! We have had a fun week in room 201. Next week we will enjoy the Children's Creations performance of The Wizard of Oz on Tuesday. I look forward to meeting with those of you who have conferences on Thursday. Please contact me or the main office if you'd like a reminder of your conference time.

I will be submitting our March Scholastic Book Order on Tuesday March 21st. Please have orders placed by then! Thank you!

This week in second grade:

In reading we set goals for ourselves and formed reading clubs with other students who have the same goal. We worked cooperatively and practiced giving each other feedback. Ask your child to tell you about his/her goal.

In writing we wrote reviews about books, movies, restaurants, and other things we like. We made sure to include our opinion and try to persuade our readers to agree with us.

In math we enjoyed measuring things in our classroom and school. We will continue measuring with the metric system next week.
In social studies we learned about jobs that are services. We made puppets with various service jobs and had a mock job fair to share about the tasks performed, tools used, and uniform worn.

Thank you to Fisher's grandma for coming in and reading to us this week! It was a fun surprise for all!

Thank you to Patrick's sister for reading us Strega Nona!

Weekend News 3-10-17

Happy Weekend!
I hope you all have something fun planned! We had another fun and busy week in second grade. We got to shop at the book fair and complete our 2nd grade MAP testing. You will be emailed a report of your child's results in a few weeks.

I look forward to meeting with each of you during conferences on March 23 and 28th.

Spring Break begins on March 31! School resumes on April 10th. I hope you all enjoy the week off!

We will take our last field trip on Thursday April 13th to the Grand Rapids Public Museum. Our class will spend the afternoon at the museum. Look for a sign up sheet to come home soon.

This week in second grade:

In reading we learned that it is harder to hold on to stories that are longer (chapter books). We practiced reading longer books with a same book partner. We worked on checking in with our partner to make sure we understood what was happening in the story. We met some funny characters who helped us understand how to use Post-its as a tool to help us keep track of longer stories.

In writing we wrote our opinions of books we've read, keeping our audience in mind. We had a special visit from a real author this week (Gabe's dad!) and thought it was SO COOL that he does the same thing when he writes a book.

In math we began our unit on measurement. This weekend you could go on a scavenger hunt and measure household items.

In science we learned that volume and mass are not equal. We measured 1/2 cup of rice and 1/2 cup of popcorn kernels (volume) and their mass was not equal. Ask your child which item had more mass. We created our own mixtures and tried to separate by using filtration. We completed this fun unit and will be working on social studies next week!

Weekend News 3-3-17

Happy Weekend!
I can't believe it is already March. We have had a fun and busy week. Congratulations to our Beauty and the Beast performers. You did an excellent job! I can't wait to see more of your faces up on stage (and backstage) next year!

Join us at the Scholastic Book Fair kick off party on Sunday from 1-3. Our class will shop during our normal library time (Wednesday at 10:30). Your child is welcome to shop on other days at recess. Please remind your child that we do not share or trade money with friends. We have had issues with this happening in the past.

Next week we will conclude our winter MAP testing. Second graders have worked so hard to show what they've learned this year.

I look forward to meeting with each of you during spring conferences. We will meet on March 23rd and 28th. Please contact me if you are unsure of your scheduled time.

This week in second grade:

In reading we worked hard to make our reading more fluent. We learned how to talk like the characters and read at a just right pace. We also began to pay attention to literary language. It almost feels like the author is tugging on your shirt and telling you "NOTICE THIS!". We looked for literary language in the books we read this week.

In writing we wrote letters recommending books we loved to others. We've been writing about characters, parts we like, and details from favorite stories.

In math we completed our unit on money and time. Please continue to practice these real life concepts with your second grader.

In science we learned about mass and volume. We learned how to use a balance and compare objects. We measured objects in grams to see which had the most mass.

Thank you to Alex's grandpa for reading to us this morning!
