Hello Second Grade Families,

I hope you've had a great week. Thanks to all who signed up for conferences using the new online scheduling. If you missed this, I will be sending home your conference time today. Hopefully this new system makes it easier for you to find a time that works.  I am looking forward to meeting with all of you on November 3rd and 9th to discuss all of the wonderful things your children have done this year.

Next week our students will have the opportunity to participate in the Kidz Have Rights program. Our session will be on Tuesday morning.

Working as a 2nd grade team!
Our Halloween Party will be held on October 31st from 12:30-1:30. I am looking forward to seeing you there! The Wealthy Parade will follow recess around 2:25. We could still use a few extra volunteers for the party. If you're available please sign up here:

This week in second grade:

In reading we rolled up our sleeves and worked on strategies to solve tricky words. We learned that you can look at the beginning or ending of a word (prefix or suffix), you can look at the vowel teams in the middle, or chunk it into parts. We also learned that some words have multiple meanings. We looked at tricky words and figured out what they could mean by using the pictures and words surrounding (context). Example: Trixie fixed a sandwich for lunch. We know 'fixed' can mean putting together something that is broken. We learned it can also mean making something. We also told jokes to work on making sure we are reading correctly.

Telling Halloween jokes to practice ways readers check themselves.
Reading it smoothly to make our partners laugh:)
In writing we studied mentor texts, noticed what the author did that was powerful, and tried it in our own writing.

In math we began working on basic addition facts. We reviewed doubles, and learned about nearby doubles (+1, -1), we also used tens frames to create a visual representation of the amount.

In science we created a pumpkin lifecycle wheel and wrote about what happens after a pumpkin plant dies. We will conclude our A Plant's Life science unit next week.

Figuring out the lifecycle of a pumpkin.

Mystery Reader
Thank you to Evie's uncle from France for being our Mystery Reader today! We learned so much about what life is like living in France, the second graders asked great questions!

Have a fantastic weekend!

IXL

Today we tried using IXL in the classroom. It is a fun way to practice math skills and feels like you're playing a game. Try to login to IXL from a device at home sometime this week.

1. Go to www.ixl.com, select second grade math

2. Have your child type his/her user name and password

Each student's user name is: firstnamelastname676
no capital letters or spaces

Each student's password is: math

Example:
user: staceygoodman676
password: math

Today we worked on E.1 and E.2 as a review. Occasionally throughout the year IXL will be assigned as homework.

Friday News 10-14-16

Hello Second Grade Families,

I hope you had a great week! Thank you so much to all of the parents who drove us to Blandford this week. It was an awesome trip and we learned so much about plants and seeds. We will not need drivers again until March...phew!

Ms. Sarah was an awesome guide!
Can you spot the frog in this picture?
We found a lot of seeds!

I will be submitting the October book order on Monday, please have your orders in by then!

We will be having our class Halloween party on Monday October 31st from 12:30-1:30. Please contact Beth if you'd like to volunteer! Students will change into costumes before the party (and after lunch). Please send your child's costume to school in a labeled bag. The Wealthy parade will be immediately after recess. Fingers crossed for good weather that day!

This week in second grade:

In reading we continued working in readers workshop and rolled up our sleeves when words got tricky! We learned and practiced strategies for what to do when you come across a word you don't know. Ask your child which tricky words he/she figured out this week!

Reading partners working back to back
Stop and jot!
In writing we worked on revision by adding capital letters, punctuation, and making sure we didn't have a case of the ands!   We also noticed that authors decide which type of book they want to write (LOL book, frustrating book, creepy book) and we tried this with a new story. Ask your second grader which type of book they tried out.

In math we worked to count in patterns within 3 digit numbers. Practice this over the weekend! Give your child a 3 digit number and have them try to continue a pattern (example: by tens 348, 358, 368 or by hundreds 451, 551, 651, 751).

In science we explored Blandford Nature Center and learned about seeds and plants.

In social studies we learned about urban, suburban, and rural communities. Ask your child to tell you about these types of communities.

Mystery Reader
Thank you to Jackson's sister Lila for being our Mystery Reader today! Make sure you sign up for your time soon!

Weekend News 10-7-16

Happy Friday!
I hope you have something fun to do this weekend! We have had a great week of learning in room 201.

Thank you to the parents who were drivers on Wednesday to Art Prize. We had such a great time! My favorite part was hearing the ideas from second graders who were inspired to create their own art. Check out pictures from this trip on the post below.

Next week we will take our last field trip of the fall that requires parent chaperone/drivers. I am so thankful for those of you who've volunteered to drive already. We are in need of at least 4 more drivers to take all students to Blandford Nature Center. If you're available, please sign up here:

I will be sending in the October Scholastic Book Order on Monday Oct. 17th. Please return your form or make your online (HB4N7) order by that day. Thank you!

We have many openings on the Mystery Reader calendar. Please sign up here:

This week in second grade:

In reading we built our reading stamina and independence during reading workshop. We learned how to scoop up words in bigger chunks to read with a more fluent sound. We also built comprehension by doing stop, think, and retell. Have your child show you our hand signals for this.

In writing we crafted a good ending for our stories. We also learned how to revise by placing capital letters and punctuation where they belong in our writing.

In math we worked with 3 digit numbers and had a lot of fun rotating through math centers. We learned to play Salute which would be an easy game to play together this weekend. All you need is a deck of cards (number only), and 3 people. Have your second grader teach you how to play!

In social studies we learned that a community is a place where people live, work, and play. We sang a fun song about communities. We created our own imaginary communities and presented them to the class.

In science we watched our plants grow and grow and recorded our observations in journals.

I hope you have the best weekend ever!
Stacey
