This week in second grade:
In reading we began our reading workshop and learned that second graders get to choose WHAT they would like to read and HOW they can read a book. We tried reading parts of stories in different voices and it was very fun. When you're reading with your child this weekend, try to use different voices to match the different parts of a story.

In writing we learned how to "unfreeze" our stories to make characters come to life. We gave them words and movement. We met with our workshop partners to plan the stories before writing and added ideas to our tiny topic notebooks.

In math we took the Chapter 1 assessment and began to work with 3 digit numbers. Make sure to check out the homework tab on the blog to see what homework is for each night.

In science we observed different plants on the playground and noticed similarities and differences. We took care of our classroom plants and learned about the lifecycle of an apple tree. Our trip to Sietsema really helped with the understanding of this!

Check out some pictures from this week:

Star Student Info

Star Student Information

Each week a student is selected to be the STAR STUDENT and decorate our “All About Me” chart.  Throughout the week, this child will have an opportunity to tell us all about him or herself so we get to know a little bit more about what he/she is like outside of school as well.

All ABOUT ME
The star student should bring in 5-10 photographs to decorate the pocket chart. Besides photographs, your child may want to include, ribbons, other awards, magazine cut-outs or internet picture print outs of favorite foods, books, movies, etc.. On the Monday of your child’s week, please place the items for the board (photos, all about me page, etc.) in an envelope, bag or box clearly marked with your child’s name.  I will return all items the following Monday.  Thank you for your help!

Favorite Book

Please allow your child to bring in their favorite book from home!  They will share this book with their class!

Show and Tell

In addition to items for the board, your student may bring in three items that will fit in the star student bag for show and tell.  These items will come to school Monday and be sent home the same Monday.

Wolfy!
A new addition this year is Wolfy! The star student will be able to take home our class “pet” and write in the journal about the fun they have together!

Please e-mail me if you any questions or if the week assigned will not work for some reason.  Thanks!

Weekend News 9-16-16

Hello Second Grade Families,

We have had a great week in second grade. We are working so hard at learning procedures and practicing our daily routines.

Thank you so much to all who've placed a Scholastic Book Order. If you would still like to make an order, you have until Monday! If you'd like to order online, use our class code HB4N7.

Picture day is this Monday September 19th! We will have our pictures taken around 1:30 pm. Please complete the form online or on the paper you received last week if you would like to order your own set of pictures.

Please join me on Tuesday September 20th for Parent Information Night at 6:45. I am excited to fill you in on all of the wonderful things we get to do in second grade.

Please contact me if you're able to drive and chaperone for our first field trip to Sietesma Orchard. It is Friday September 23. We will leave Wealthy around 8:30 am and return around 11am. If you are unable to volunteer for this trip, we have many other opportunities coming up soon! To help fund all of these special experiences, please send in your child's $20 activity fee as soon as possible. Thank you!

Check out pictures of some of the fun things we've done this week!

Weekend News 9-9-16 Welcome to Second Grade!

Hello Second Grade Families,

It has been so much fun getting to know your children this week! We have such a great group of students in our class and I can already tell it is going to be a memorable year.

This blog will be my primary form of communication for the year. I love to post pictures of things that are happening in our classroom and a weekly newsletter. The easiest way for you to receive this information is to follow the blog. As a blog follower, you will receive an email each time I post to the blog. Please enter your email in the box to the right of this post, a picture to help you is below...
This works best from a computer, I do not think the mobile site is capable of allowing you to follow.

We had an INCREDIBLE first week of school. I feel very fortunate to have all of your children in my class this year. We had fun learning about classroom procedures, Wealthy's TEAM expectationsclass rules (minion video), and many other things. It is always hard to squeeze everything into the first week of school. Next week will be a continuation of many of the things we did this week.

Practicing our daily procedures...

We made sure to take a few brain breaks with GoNoodle and give our bodies time to adapt to the long school day. You can make an account of your own to use at home, it is SO much fun!

Today I am sending home our very first Scholastic Book Order in your child's yellow communication folder. If you are interested in purchasing books, please return the order form and a CHECK (no cash please!) to school by Monday September 19. You can also order online by visiting https://clubs2.scholastic.com/ and using our class code HB4N7

We LOVE Scholastic books in room 201 because they send free books to our classroom with most purchases. We also save bonus points to purchase new items for our class.

Please join me on Tuesday September 20th for Parent Information Night in Room 201. We will meet from 6:45-7:30. I will share with you all of the wonderful things we get to do in second grade.

Happy together in our classroom communities:

Please contact me if you have any questions about this week or second grade!

Have a wonderful weekend!
