Spring Break News!

Hello Second Grade Families,

I hope you all have a wonderful Spring Break! I wish safe travels to anyone who will be traveling near or far. School resumes on April 11th. We will be swimming on Thursday April 14 from 12:20-1:20.

If your child completed a March Is Reading Month calendar for 2 FREE Whitecaps tickets, please send it in ASAP! You will receive a voucher that you can use to redeem 2 free tickets (and buy however many others needed).

We had a great time conducting surveys and graphing data this week. Students created their own survey and made pretty graphs to display the data.

Take care,

Weekend News 3-25-16

Hello Second Grade Families,

Happy Spring! Thank you to all parents who came for conferences last night. I look forward to meeting with the rest of you on Tuesday evening. I love meeting and having the time to share all of the wonderful things each student is doing.

We enjoyed watching Children's Creations production of Charlotte's Web and swimming on Thursday.

We had a great field trip to the Grand Rapids Public Museum today. Thank you to the parents who helped by driving and meeting us there!

This week in second grade:

In reading we read different versions of the Cinderella story and charted the elements we noticed in each story.

In writing we began our unit on realistic fiction and learned how to choose a problem and solution for our story.

In math we began our unit on data collection and graphing. We are enjoying this fun unit that allows for a great deal of moving and surveying classmates.

In social studies we learned how San Francisco has changed over time. We culminated this chapter with our field trip to the Public Museum's History of Grand Rapids exhibit. Ask your child to tell you about his/her favorite part of the field trip.

Have a great weekend, school next Friday!

Thank you to Ellen's mom for being our Mystery Reader today!

Weekend News 3-18-16

Happy Weekend!
I hope you've all had a great week! Spirit Week was a blast! It was fun seeing everyone dress up each day.

Next Thursday we will be swimming from 12:20-1:20. Please send your child to school with a bathing suit and towel in a labeled bag. Your child is welcome to bring goggles but there are some available to borrow. Parent helpers, please arrive at 12:10. Thank you!

Parent/Teacher conferences will be held on Thursday March 24 and Tuesday March 29th. I look forward to meeting with each and every one of you. Thanks to all who've sent in RSVP forms.

On March 25th we will be taking a field trip to the Grand Rapids Public Museum. I have contacted parents that will chaperone and drive students to the museum. Thank you to all who volunteered! It is going to be a fun day!

Spring Break begins Friday April 1st and ends on April 10th. School resumes on Monday April 11th.

This week in second grade:
In reading we read folktales and learned about the elements that these stories usually have.

In writing we completed our information writing unit and fixed up our best teaching books. I look forward to sharing these with you at conferences.

In math we measured items around our classroom using the metric system. We discussed the reason why it takes more centimeters to measure something than it does meters. We have been enjoying playing games to improve number sense at the end of math each day. We are building our basic fact fluency!

In science we completed our measuring unit. We did an interesting experiment comparing mass and volume. We learned that even if we have the same amount of something (1/2 cup of rice and 1/2 cup of popcorn kernels), they can have different weight. We discovered that 10 popcorn kernels are equal to 120 grains of rice. WOW! We wrote a lab report to record our findings.

Have a great weekend!

Weekend News 3-11-16

Happy Weekend!

I hope you've enjoyed the spring feel of this week as much as I have! We had a great walk today to Clark Home where we visited with and read to residents.

Your date and time for Spring Parent/Teacher conferences was sent home last week. Conferences are March 24th and 29th from 4-7 pm. Thanks to all who have returned forms. Please let me know if you are unable to make your conference so I can accommodate. I have so many wonderful things to share with you all!

Next week is School Spirit Week! Check below for what to wear each day of the week...

Monday- PJ day
Tuesday- Crazy hair day
Wednesday- Beach day
Thursday- Wear green
Friday- School spirit/ Go East

We will also be collecting (until Friday) gently used books to donate to children in need.

We will be taking a field trip to the Grand Rapids Public Museum on Friday March 25th. We will leave Wealthy around 12:05 and return by 3:00 pm. Thank you to all of the parents who offered to drive. I will contact you soon to let you know if I will need you as a chaperone!

Spring Break will begin Friday April 1st and conclude on Sunday April 10th. School resumes on Monday April 11th.

This week in second grade:

In reading we read tall tales and wrote a tall tale about ourselves. These hilarious stories turned out great!

In writing we looked at nonfiction mentor texts and created a chart of all the things the authors did to teach us. We tried these techniques in our own writing. We also added size, shape, and color words to our books. This helps our reader create a picture in their mind.

In math we took advantage of the warm weather and went outside! We estimated and then measured the lengths of different playground objects. We also began our unit on measuring with the metric system.

In science we measured the mass of many objects by using a balance. We compared the objects and ranked them from lightest to heaviest.

Thank you to Dr. and Mrs. Gohel for visiting on Wednesday for an EYE opening lesson on the human eye! The eyeball cookies were just delicious! :)

Have a great weekend!

Weekend News- March 4, 2016

Hello Second Grade Families,
Can't believe March is already here! Spring is on the horizon. We enjoyed watching our talented Wealthy Wizards perform in the school musical Aladdin this week. Check out other performances tonight and tomorrow afternoon.

Because of the difficult cold and flu season our class experienced this winter, we are down to only 1 box of kleenex left for the rest of the year. If you have an extra box lying around the house, we'd really appreciate if you could send it to school! Thank you!

Next week, the Scholastic Book Fair will be making it's yearly visit to our learning commons. We will be shopping on Monday afternoon as well as Friday morning during our library time. Please send your child to school with money if you would like to purchase new books. Students are also able to shop at recess and after school.
This week in second grade:
In reading we studied tall tales. We learned that they have many silly exaggerations. Ask your second grader which tall tale was the best. We made a cute tall tale craft telling all about our favorite tall tale. Check it out in our hallway.

In writing we asked ourselves who, what ,where, when, why, and how when writing about our topic. We thought about questions our readers might have when reading our books and answered them in our writing.

In math we measured the length and width of many objects in our classroom. We learned the difference between centimeters, inches, feet. We learned that when the unit is smaller, we need more of an object to cover the same distance.

In science we practiced measuring capacity. We scooped popcorn kernels into different size containers and observed similarities and differences.

Thank you to Charlie's mom for being our Mystery Reader today!
