Weekend News 2-26-16

Hello Second Grade Families,
I hope you've all had a nice week! What a fun surprise the snow day was! It sounds like most of you had fun making snow people and having snow ball fights.
Our swimming session will be rescheduled and I will let you know when as soon as possible.
Thank you to Adrienne's Nana for being our Mystery Reader today!

This week in second grade:
In reading we read biographies about famous African Americans in honor of Black History Month. We worked together in our reading groups to research a person and create a google slide telling all about their life. We presented these slides to the class.

MLK presentation-

Ruby Bridges presentation-

Harriet Tubman presentation-

Rosa Parks presentation-

Michael Jordan presentation-

In writing we worked on writing teaching books. We have learned so much about many different topics this week! Some kids wrote about video games, siblings, recipes, sports, and animals. We will be writing information books for the next few weeks.

In math we concluded our unit on money and time and began a new one on measuring distance. Math and science are perfectly matched right now so we are learning lots about measurement.

In science we explored single substance and mixtures. We measured and mixed different substances and observed the changes that occurred. We made oobleck and GOO! You make make them together this weekend using the recipes below.

4 tbs cornstarch
2-3 tbs water
mix until desired consistency
The activity goes great with this book:

1/4 cup water
1/4 cup elmers glue

1/4 cup borax solution (mix 4tbs of borax with 4 cups of water)

Weekend News 2-19-16

Happy Weekend!
I hope you've all enjoyed the beautiful weather today. We have had another fun-filled week in room 201. Thank you so much to all of the parents who helped with our Valentine's Day party on Tuesday. We celebrated the 100th Day of School on Wednesday and learned about U.S. Presidents for the rest of the week. Whew!

We will be swimming on Thursday February 25th from 12:20-1:20pm. Thank you to the parents who have signed up to chaperone! Plan on meeting us in the lobby at 12:15.

I wanted to share a special poem that Laura Purdie Salas wrote about her visit to Wealthy last week. It really speaks to the special thing we have going at this wonderful school. I am so proud to be a Wealthy Wizard!

This week in second grade:

In reading we read about the lives of George Washington and Abe Lincoln. We compared the presidents to ourselves and learned about the important things both men did for our country.

In writing we finished our Can Be books that we worked on with Laura Purdie Salas last week.

In math we learned how to tell time on an analog clock. Have your child teach you how to play "beat the clock" this weekend!

In science we learned about measuring capacity. We used tablespoons to measure water into a cup. We had a great conversation about why some of us got different results- even though our measuring tool and cup size were the same.

Weekend News 2-5-16

Hello Second Grade Families,

I hope you have had a great first week of February. We have been busy and hard at work on many different projects this week. Your child's report card for the first semester is available in Skyward as of today. You should have received an email with directions on how to access this information.

Next week we are excited to be hosting poet/author Laura Purdie Salas. Our class will have three opportunities to work with Laura and are ready to learn from an expert! To prepare for the author visit, we have been immersing ourselves in reading and writing poetry. Mr. Morey has been hosting a show called The Poetry Parade that features poetry from Laura as well as Wealthy students. Many of our kids have been featured. Check out this episode to see the poetry of a few kids from our class.
(You will need to create a livestream account if you would like to view this link)

Remind your second grader to do his/her science homework this weekend! Your child must make a paper airplane (any design) out of the paper that was sent home on Wednesday. Please send this to school on Monday.  Join us on Monday from 2:30-3:15 for an airplane throwing contest. If you would like to come in and assist students in measuring distance, it would be very helpful!

In math we have started to study money. It would be helpful if you could send in a small ziploc bag with pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters for your child to use. This weekend, allow your second grader to help you pay for something (movie ticket, coffee, etc) and help you count the change. Real life experience in using money is the best way to teach students!

Our class was hit hard over the last two weeks by illness. Because of this, we are running very low on tissues! Please send in a box of tissues to help us stay healthy for the remainder of the year. Thank you so much!

Our class is having a Valentine's Day party on Tuesday February 16th from 12:30-1:30. If you would like to sign up to help with the party, please click HERE!

Don't forget- there will be no school next Friday February 12th or Monday February 15th due to Mid Winter Break. Safe travels to all of you who are going somewhere!

This week in second grade:

In reading we continued our discussion of character traits from last week. We learned how these traits reflect who a person is on the inside rather than outside. We read books about real life African American heroines (Rosa, Ruby, Harriet) and discussed the character traits these women showed when faced with unthinkable situations.

In writing we began our information writing unit. We are compiling research on different animals to create "Can Be"  books in the style of Laura Purdie Salas' Can Be series. We will be revising and editing our books with the author next week!

We used different sources to research.
Students were so excited to pick their own partner to work with!
We built great background knowledge about our animals.
In math we began our measurement unit and will be spending the next weeks studying money and time. We identified and counted coins this week. We will be using our knowledge of addition and subtraction from previous units to add and subtract money.

In science we conducted an experiment where groups made a ramp and tested a variety of items. We measured time and distance traveled. We recorded our findings in our science journals and had some GREAT conversations about how we measure. Don't forget to make a paper airplane this weekend and send it in for the big competition on Monday!

The Gummies
The Skittles
The Marshmallows
We recorded a conclusion for our data

Thank you to Molly's dad for being our Mystery Reader today!
