Weekend News 1-30-16

Happy Weekend Everyone!

I hope you are all enjoying some family time this weekend. I had the best time at a Guided Math conference on Wednesday and Thursday and learned SO many new things that we will be trying in class! Looking forward to seeing you all on Monday!

Parents, you can view your child's report card next Friday February 5th. I am so proud of the hard work our second graders have put in during the first marking period. We have a lot to celebrate!

Thank you to Calder's grandpa for being our Mystery Reader last week. We loved hearing a familiar Chris Van Allsburg story with a great message.

Weekend News 1-22-16

Hello Second Grade Families,

I hope everyone has had a great week. We have had so many fun opportunities this week.
On Monday morning we did a silent march in honor of Dr. King's birthday followed by an inspiring assembly. We also enjoyed an assembly by Brightstar Theater.

Important reminders:

  • Swimming next week has been CANCELLED! It is rescheduled for March 24th.
  • There will be NO SCHOOL next Friday January 29th.
  • Poet Laura Purdie Salas will be visiting from February 8-11th
  • Mid Winter Break February 12th and 15th, no school
  • Valentine's Day party February 16th

Silent March.

We wrote acrostic poems about Dr. King and they turned out beautifully.

Sharing a poem about Dr. King.
We enjoyed Brightstar Theater's funny and entertaining performance on the Black History Hall of Fame. We were introduced to heroes like Sojourner Truth, Harriet Tubman, Dr. Daniel Hale Williams, and many more!
Brightstar Theater, a 2 person act.
We got to "meet" many famous people.
This week in second grade:

In reading we learned about different poetry techniques and tried them out in our reading response notebook. We are compiling our poetry into a google doc and will publish a class book soon!

In writing we focused on writing captivating introductions and conclusions. We will be finishing our opinion writing unit next week!

In  math we practiced 3 digit addition. This is coming pretty easily to the students because of our previous work on 2 digit addition. Keep up the great work on the homework each night. It helps reinforce the concepts so well.

In science we began our unit on measurement. We learned that there are standard units of measure (ruler, tape measure, gallon, thermometer, clock) and non standard units (paper clips, hands, books). We worked with partners to measure our bodies and record the data.

Measuring length.
How tall are you?
We worked with partners to measure parts of our bodies.
How long is your arm?
How long is your ring finger?
We used standard and non-standard units to measure.

I hope you all have a great weekend!

Weekend News 1-15-16

Hello Second Grade Families,
I hope you've all enjoyed this snowy week. We have been busy and hard at work in room 201. The January Scholastic book order will be due on Monday January 18th. I will send in the order during the school day so please make selections before then. Our class code is HB4N7 if you would like to utilize the online order form.

We will be having our Valentine's Day class party in the afternoon on Tuesday February 16th due to an author visit and mid-winter break. Please spend some time (before then )with your second grader creating a Valentine box to hold the goodies on the day of the party. The sky is the limit as far as design goes. You are welcome to use your creativity (or Pinterest) to create a fun vessel for your child. Easy items to use are old shoe boxes or empty tissue boxes. You could even go as simple as a paper bag.  Please make sure it is something that your child can carry by themselves and  that it can fit in a locker. I can't wait to see what you come up with!

Join us for Family Movie Night on Friday January 22nd for a showing of the Minions Movie.

Our class will be swimming date has been CHANGED to March 24th, we will swim from 12:20-1:20. We will NOT be swimming in January.

There is no school for students

We had a special afternoon preparing for our celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday on Monday. We worked in mixed grade level groups and each created a part of a large mural that will be displayed in the cafeteria. On Monday, we will join the other students of Wealthy in a silent march. We will leave immediately when the students arrive in the morning and will conclude our march in the auditorium for the MLK assembly. Please make sure your child is dressed appropriately for the short walk (boots are a must!)

This week in second grade:

In reading we learned about different techniques that poets use in their writing. We attempted to write poetry with alliteration, rhyme, repetition, color (5 senses), and onomatopoeia. Ask your child about his or her favorite poem type.

In writing we compared two books and wrote nominations for things we loved about a book. Ask your second grader who he or she nominated for an award.

In math we concluded our study of subtraction strategies and ROCKED the Chapter 5 test. We began 3-digit addition in Chapter 6.

In social studies we learned how leaders in a community are elected. We learned through a mock election that citizens vote for someone who has similar beliefs.

We will begin our science unit on measurement next week!

Thank you to Sam's dad for being our mystery reader today!

I hope you all have a great weekend.

Happy New Year 1-8-16

Hello Second Grade Families,

I hope you all had a wonderful break and enjoyed the extra time with loved ones. It was so nice to be reunited with the students this week. I loved hearing about your holiday traditions and the fun things your families did over the break. We got back into our routine and are ready for a great start to the second half of second grade.

On Thursday January 28th we will be swimming at the Wealthy pool from 12:15-1:20. Click the link on the far right side of this page if you'd like to sign up to volunteer to supervise the students.

On Friday January 29th there will be no school for students. Teachers will be working hard on report cards during that time.

This week in second grade:

In reading we learned about features of nonfiction text. We charted text features and wrote about what they teach us in our reader's notebooks. We focused on polar animals and their life cycles to go along with the polar weather outside!

In writing we learned how an author uses capital letters. We read a funny book about a class of students who forgot to use capital letters in their writing. We began the editing process in our opinion writing.

In math we continued to work on and learn new strategies for 2-digit subtraction with regrouping. We have learned that to solve a problem we can draw a picture, use the standard algorithm to borrow from the tens place, and we can use a number line to count forward (add to subtract). Have your second grader show you these strategies this weekend. We will take the Chapter 5 assessment next week.

In social studies we learned how one person can make a difference in a community. We identified a problem in our school (kids getting hurt on the ice hill) and discussed solutions to the problem. We learned that we can all make a difference in the lives of others by the decisions we make each day.

Thank you to Ellie's mom for being our mystery reader today!!

Have a great weekend!
