Mystery Reader 9-25-15

Thank you Mr. Morey for being our very first Mystery Reader of the 2015-2016 school year.

We loved listening to you read What I Saw In The Teachers Lounge by Jerry Pallotta. Mr. Morey shared his text-to-self connection with us that Mr. Pallotta came to Wealthy School four years ago. How cool!  Thanks for visiting Mr. Morey!

Friday News 9-28-15

Happy Weekend! Happy Fall!

I hope everyone has something fun planned for this weekend. We have had another wonderful week in second grade. Thank you again to all of the families who came out for Parent Information Night. If you missed the presentation, please email me and I will send you the slideshow.

Check out yesterday's post about Star Student for information on that fun program.

We will be going on our first field trip to Sietsema Orchards on Wednesday October 7th from 1-2:30 pm. Check out their website here.   Our room moms will be sending out a sign up sheet for drivers. Keep in mind, you need to have room for boosters for each child that rides in your vehicle, unless they are 4'9 or already 8 years old.

We enjoyed meeting with our reading buddies this week in Mrs. Anderson's classroom. The 4th graders interviewed the 2nd graders AND showed them their KidBlog sites.

We are going to have so much fun reading together this year!

This week in reading we discussed connections. We made text to self, text to text, and text to world connections. We made up cool symbols to go with each type of connection. Ask your child to share these with you.

This week in writing we learned how to write a small moment personal narrative story. These are true stories about your children's lives. We learned how to start at the heart of the story because it is the most important part. Ask your child what he or she is writing about.

This week in math we learned how to skip count by 1's, 5's, and 10's. We broke apart numbers into tens and ones, and we identified missing numbers on a 100's chart.

This week in science we planted control and experiment plants to see what a seed needs to be able to grow. Ask your child which variable he/she decided to change in the experiment plant. Ask your child how the two plants are similar and different.

Have a great weekend!

Star Student

Next week our Star Student program will begin. The schedule was in the Parent Night packet.  I have also posted it below for your convenience. I will send home a letter the Friday before your child is to be Star Student for the week. This letter will have instructions on what to do and what to bring to school.  We will take turns in ABC order. If your child's date doesn't work for your family, please let me know and I will fill in at the end of the list on a make-up date.

Each week a student is selected to be our Star Student.
Throughout the week, this child will have an opportunity to tell us all about him or herself so we get to know a little bit more about what he/she is like outside of school as well as in school.

 All About ME poster
Please work as a family to color and complete this poster that will be displayed in our classroom for the week. It will come home the Friday before your child is Star Student and be returned the following week.

Bulletin BOARD
The star student should bring in 5-10 photographs to decorate the bulletin board. Besides photographs, your child may want to include, ribbons, awards, magazine cut-outs or internet picture print outs of favorite foods, books, movies, etc.

Favorite Book

Please allow your child to bring in their favorite book from home.  They will share this book with their class. It will be returned after sharing.

Show and Tell

In addition to items for the board, your student may bring in three items for show and tell.  These items will come to school Monday and be sent home the same Monday.

On the Monday of your child’s week, please place the items for the board (photos, all about me page, etc.) in an envelope, bag or box clearly marked with your child’s name.  All items will be returned.  Thank you for your help!

Friday News 9-18-15 ( a little late...)

Hello Second Grade Families!

I hope you all had a nice weekend. My family enjoyed traveling Up North for a wedding (which is why this post is late).  Believe it or not, the trees are already beginning to change and fall is in the air!

We had an awesome second week of second grade! Thanks to everyone who submitted a September Book Order. I finalized the order today. The books should arrive in 2 weeks.

Don't forget that picture day is this Thursday. Please send in forms/money before then if you would like to order pictures.

Please join me TOMORROW night for Parent Information Night at 5:15 in room 201. I will fill you in on all of the cool things we get to do in second grade. Please bring a device that is able to access the internet. We will be doing some techy things!!

Questions can be asked on our own personal Today's Meet back channel:

You can sign up for classroom reminders via text by using Remind 101:

First Science Lesson

It was too beautiful to have science inside today. We began our plant unit by going on a "seed hunt" on the playground and collecting seeds. We discussed attributes of different seeds and learned what is needed for a seed to grow.

Friday News 9-11-15- First of the year!

Hello Second Grade Families,
This is the first edition of our weekly Friday News. I will post each week to share pictures and events from our classroom. The easiest way to get this news is to "follow" the blog. This will email you each time a new post is made. I have noticed many of you are new followers (Hi! And thanks!) and some have had trouble finding the "follow" bar. I realized that the mobile site doesn't have a place to do this. So, if you tried to follow from your phone, it would be impossible to figure out! Try again from a computer and PLEASE contact me with any questions! I will have Chromebooks available to help you do this at our Parent Information Night (Sept 22 at 5:15) as well. I apologize for any confusion.

We had an AWESOME first week of school. I can't believe what a nice group of kids this is. I feel very fortunate to have all of your children in my class this year. We had fun learning about classroom procedures, Wealthy's TEAM expectations, class rules, and many other things. It is always hard to squeeze everything into the first week of school, Next week will be a continuation of many of the things we did this week. We made sure to take a few brain breaks with GoNoodle and give our bodies time to adapt to the long school day.

Today I am sending home our very first Scholastic Book Order in your child's yellow communication folder. If you are interested in purchasing books, please return the order form and a CHECK (no cash please!) to school by Monday September 21. You can also order online by visiting and using our class code HB4N7
We LOVE Scholastic in room 201 because they send free books to our classroom with most purchases. We also save bonus points to purchase new items for our class.

Happy together in our classroom communities:

Please contact me if you have any questions about the first week of school, I can already tell this is going to be the BEST YEAR EVER!

Have a great weekend,

Important News for First Day

Hello Second Grade Families,

It was wonderful to meet so many of you yesterday! I am thankful that we had time to meet and chat. It is so nice to be able to match faces to names. I look forward to meeting everyone else on Tuesday.

Tuesday September 8th will be our first day of school. It is a half day that will begin at 8:15 and students will be dismissed at 11:30.

It is important for you to know that on our first day of school, all second graders will go to SPECIALS.

Mrs. G's class will first go to Music with Mr. Woodward, next Gym with Mrs. Wagenmaker, and finally, Art with Mrs. DenDulk. Each special class will be abbreviated due to the half day. Please make sure your child has gym shoes. Because of this, we won't have the opportunity to do the typical first day of school activities. Wednesday will be our first full day together.

Parents, please take a moment to complete the "Student Information Form" (the top right tab of this blog) to give me important information about your child and family. This is in lieu of paper forms that typically come home. Please let me know if you have any questions about this. I am happy to help!

I am excited to begin this year, we are going to have so much fun!
Enjoy your last few days of summer!
