Winter Break News 12-18-15

Hello Second Grade Families,

Wow! We made it to winter break! I always say at the end of summer that it feels like we blink and suddenly it is Christmas. This year has been no different, I'm not sure how time passes so quickly. What a wonderful first half of second grade we've had this year. We have such a great group of students working together to create a really special experience. I look forward to the rest and relaxation in the days ahead to prepare us for the second half of the year. I hope you have a great break and soak up the extra family time while you make new memories.

Thank you to all of the parents who helped make yesterday's class party such a fun event!

Thank you very much for your generous class gift. I am so fortunate to have the privilege to teach your children and get to know your families this year. Check your child's folder for a thank you letter from me.

Look in your child's folder for information about reading and math challenges your child can participate in during break. Your child will have the opportunity to earn a prize for returning the winter break marshmallow reading log as well as for completing an hour (or more) of IXL practice. A reminder of IXL login info:

Can you believe it is already December? Where has this year gone? We have been having such a great time in second grade! I've added an "Important Links" gadget to the top right side of this blog (not available from the mobile site unless you scroll to the bottom and select "view web version"). This will be a place where you can easily access the sign up options for our class. We currently have a sign up for Mystery Reader, Classroom Volunteers, Swim Helper, and Computer Lab.
We had fun a fun TEAM celebration with our reading buddies today!

We have a lot of exciting events coming up in the next few weeks.

The December Scholastic Book Order is due on December 11th.

This week in second grade:

In reading we began an author study of Chris VanAllsburg. Mrs. Sarjeant and I had the pleasure of meeting this East Grand Rapids author last year. We will be studying his works for the next few weeks! Ask your child to share his or her favorite book we've read so far.

In writing we wrote opinion letters about the books we've read. Ask your second grader which books he/she is writing about. We have learned how to write our opinion on characters, favorite parts, pictures, and titles.

In math we continued to practice strategies for 2-digit addition. We will take the Chapter 4 math assessment next week. Remember you can always access the test review by clicking this link...

In social studies we learned about goods to prepare ourselves to shop at the upcoming flea market. We created our own good (clown game) by working in an assembly line like factory workers. Ask your child what his or her job was in the assembly line.

Following directions was VERY important for this activity.

Thanksgiving News 11-24-15

Happy Thanksgiving!
I hope you have a relaxing and restful Thanksgiving with your family. I look forward to spending some extra time with my loved ones.

Yesterday, I sent home an optional Thanksgiving homework assignment. It is an interview sheet for your child to use with a family member from a different generation. I look forward to sharing these with the class when we return and learning about family traditions.

I would like to invite parents to volunteer in our classroom on Wednesday and Friday mornings. This will be a time to do odd jobs to help TEAM 2 or work with students. A sign up sheet will be available soon. If you have another day of the week/time that works better for your schedule and the desire to volunteer, please let me know!

Important Dates:

On Thursday December 10th we will swim for the first time. Our session is from 12:20-1:20. Please let me know if you are available to chaperone the boys or girls locker room and swimming session.
The sign up is located HERE.

Later on the 10th we will visit the annual Wealthy Flea Market. Students are welcome to bring up to $5 in quarters to shop from the 4th graders.

On Friday December 11th we will walk to Clark Home for our first visit with the residents. We will leave Wealthy around 9:40 and return just before lunch. Please let me know if you would like to walk with us. We always love to have parents join us for this special program.

On December 17th we will have our class holiday party. It will be from 1-2 pm. Following recess, we will go to Pioneer for the Wealthy Holiday concert around 2:30 pm.

December 18th will be PJ day. We will have a special TEAM 2 get-together and will enjoy an assembly in the afternoon.

See below for a note from the room moms:
The library will be reopening the week of Dec 7.  Mrs. Goodman’s class will be going on Fridays from 10:30-11am.  If any one is available to volunteer during that time (every week, every other week, or even once a month), your help would be greatly appreciated.  Please let me know if you are interested & your availability, and I can inform the Learning Commons coordinators.
There is Volunteer Training on Tuesday Dec 1 from 8:30-9am OR 2:45-3:15pm in the Learning Commons.  Trish Reid will be teaching/reviewing the check-out/check-in and shelving processes and also sharing some best practice guidelines with our group. Please let me know if you have any questions.

Thank you,
Kim Carnevale

Hello Second Grade Families,

Are you ready for some SNOW?

We have had a fun filled week in second grade. Congratulations to our Variety Show performers for putting on a great show yesterday. We were so proud to see you on stage giving your all. If you didn't have the pleasure of seeing the teacher act, you can find it here.

On Thursday we will be having a Team 2 Thanksgiving share. Please send a peanut/tree nut free snack that will be placed in our communal share. Some ideas: pretzels. m&m's, marshmallows, popcorn, skittles, goldfish, or anything else your child would like to bring.

Thank you for sending in your disguised turkey this week. They turned out so well and some of them are HILARIOUS! Check out pictures of your work...

A ninja and a State fan!

We had the pleasure of having TWO Mystery Readers visit our classroom today. The kids love this fun program. Sign up to be a Mystery Reader HERE!

Thank you to Cameile's Grandma for reading to us!
Thank you to Calder's mom for reading to us!

Next week we will only have school on Monday and Tuesday. I hope you all have a wonderful Thanksgiving with family and friends. Safe travels!

This week in second grade:

In reading we learned that good readers ask questions as they read. This week we focused on informational text. We read 5 books from the exciting Who Would Win series by Jerry Pallotta. The kids had fun guessing which animal would win and we learned a lot of cool facts!

In writing we worked on opinion writing. Look for a few persuasive turkey related pieces to come home this weekend.

In math we learned strategies to help with 2-digit addition. Take some time this weekend to do some fact practice with flash cards, IXL, or another website.

In social studies we learned about map skills. We learned how to use a compass rose. We discovered what continent, country, state, city, and neighborhood we live in.

Student Leadership Team Updates
Our Student Leadership Team has organized a school-wide service learning project. Together as a school, we are creating Supper Packs for Kid’s Food Basket. These packs are passed out to area schools to ensure that every child goes home to a nutritious dinner. In Addition to the Supper Pack, a fresh fruit, vegetable and protein source are included in each Sack Supper. We are asking each child to donate one of the following items:  individual fruit cups, juice boxes (100% juice, please), small boxes of raisins, granola bars, or  plastic bags. I may follow up with further requests depending on the number of bags we are able to fill and the remaining items.  There will be a designated spot in our classroom to collect these items, so feel free to send them in anytime. Our last collection day will be Friday, December 4. Thank you for your support!
If your last name begins with…
o   A through B- Quart size plastic Ziploc bags
o   C through H – Small raisin boxes
o   I through R – 100% juice juice boxes  (7 oz. or less)
S through T- Individual fruit cup
o   U through Z- Granola bars
Have a nice weekend!
