Mystery Reader!

Thank you Mrs. Zyskowski for being our first Mystery Reader!
We loved listening to you read The Polar Express.

Weekly News 12-12-14

This week second grade:

In reading this week we learned that good readers infer what the author isn’t saying by using our schema and the information in the text.  We enjoyed reading The Mysteries of Harris Burdick .  This is a book that has 14 different illustrations, a title, and a caption...but no story! We had to use inference to figure out what was happening in the story. We wrote our own versions of stories using the pictures from the book. We will create a class book of these tales. Look for your child’s story to come home soon.
In writing this week we continued to work on opinion writing. We are writing letters about our opinions of the books we read in class. We tried to think of our audience this week. This helps authors decide what information to include in a letter. We also learned that we don’t want to run the ending of a book for our reader, it is a good idea to leave the reader with a cliffhanger!
In math this week we continued to practice 2-digit subtraction with and without regrouping. Your child should be able to show you many strategies to solve these problems (break apart, base ten blocks, number line, hundreds chart, draw a picture, and standard algorithm).
In social studies this week we learned how to be a good shopper. This was perfect timing with the annual Flea Market. We learned that good shoppers buy what they need before what they want. The kids shared what they do with allowance (save or spend). We learned a fun song and were able to apply our new knowledge while shopping at the Flea Market.

We have a busy week next week! Our holiday party will be held on Thursday the 18th from 1-2pm. The holiday concert will begin at 2:20pm. We are having a read-in and pajama day on Friday the 19th.

Holiday break is December 22-January 4, 2015

We did a fun social studies exploration where each student was given $10 to shop in a group store.

Students had to make choices between needs and wants. They only had a set amount of money to spend.

We worked in groups and practiced taking turns while shopping.
We graphed our purchases and recorded on paper.

Some reminders...

Happy Tuesday!
I wanted to remind everyone that Wealthy's annual Flea Market will be held this Thursday beginning at 12:30 pm. Please have your child bring $5 in quarters and a plastic grocery bag to hold their purchases. Our class will be shopping from 12:30-1:00 pm.
We will have our classroom holiday party from 1-2 pm on Thursday December 18th. The holiday concert will follow at 2:20pm. I hope to see you there!
I also wanted to let you know that on Friday December 19th we will be having a pajama day! Your child is welcome to wear pj's and bring one stuffed animal for a day of reading and fun!
Have a great week!

12-5-14 Friday News!

Happy Friday!
I am so relieved we made it through our first full week together! Look for a letter about me to come home in your child's folder today. I am looking forward to getting to know everyone this year! This blog will be the primary location where you will find news, homework, pictures, and links for our class. Each Friday I will be posting a newsletter to this page. I suggest you complete the "follow by email" box on the right side of this page -------------->
This will email you every time I update the page and will keep you in the loop.

I am hoping to move away from a paper newsletter this year but if you are unable to access the blog regularly, please let me know.

News for the week of December 1-5:
In reading  we began our author study of Chris Van Allsburg. We are going to spend the next 2 weeks reading his books and learning about his life. Ask your child what his or her favorite story was this week. Check out the links page for the link to his website.
In writing we learned that authors have opinions about books. We picked books with our favorite characters and wrote letters about them. We learned that an opinion is something we think that may be different from everyone else. We are going to be working on opinion writing for the next several weeks. Help your child with this by pointing out opinion writing you see in real life (newspaper/magazine/internet articles, movie reviews, restaurant reviews, persuasive letters, etc.)
In math we learned a few strategies for solving subtraction problems with regrouping. Have your child teach you the break apart strategy and the using blocks strategy.
In social studies we learned that people in communities have jobs that help keep us safe and happy. We learned that a service is a job that helps or takes care of people. Talk to your child about the jobs that people in your lives have.

Thank you for sending in items for Kids Food Basket. We had a great time assembling breakfast bundles for children in need.

I am submitting the DECEMBER Scholastic Book Order today.

Yesterday we had a TEAM 2 Celebration where we played a game that demonstrated the team expectation: make a difference.

We respectfully listened to Mrs. Bishop give directions
We made a difference by working together as a class.

Students worked as a team to get all of the hula hoops to the end of  the row!

We had to talk to make a plan.

We cheered each other on as we played!

Breakfast Bundles

Don't forget to send in items for Breakfast Bundles for Kids Food Basket by Thursday morning!

Our Student Leadership Team has organized a school-wide service learning project. Together as a school, we are creating breakfast bundles for Kid’s Food Basket. These bundles are passed out to area schools to ensure that every child starts their day with a nutritious breakfast.  We are asking each child to donate one of the following items:  individual cereal boxes, juice boxes (100% juice, please), fruit snacks/raisins, granola bars, plastic bags. I may follow up with further requests depending on the number of bags we are able to fill and the remaining items.  There will be a designated spot in our classroom to collect these items, so feel free to send them in anytime. Our last collection day will be Thursday, December 4. Thank you for your support!
If your last name begins with…
o   A through E- Quart size plastic Ziploc bags
o   F through N – Individual cereal boxes
o   O through R – 100% juice juice boxes  (7 oz. or less)
o   S through T- Fruit snacks or raisins
o   U through Z- Granola bars

Welcome to our class blog!

December 1, 2014

Hello Second Grade Families,

I am so excited to welcome you to our new class blog! I have been silently working on it over the past few months but am officially ready to let you see it today. Look here for updates and class information.

Today we began our author study on the wonderful Chris Van Allsburg and the kids really enjoyed learning background information on the author and reading the first story. We explored his website during iPad station today and will continue to throughout the week.

Spelling will be done a little differently from now on (as will most things!). Your child copied his or her spelling list in class today and will have a handwritten list in the yellow folder. Use this to practice the words on Spelling City or in other ways. We will have a test on Friday. Please let me know if you have any questions. Look for the December reading log to come home today. Work on reading for 20 minutes per night throughout the month and turn it in before winter break.

Math homework may look a bit different. We will be utilizing IXL when it is aligned with our current lesson. We will be using pages from our workbook when it is not. Look for a little sheet of paper (in your child's yellow folder) that lists the math homework for this week.

Math Homework:
Monday: IXL H.8 Break apart ones
Tuesday:IXL F.4 Break apart numbers to subtract
Wednesday: worksheet from book
Thursday: worksheet from book
Friday: worksheet from book

Look for the first Scholastic book club flyer in today's folder. You can click here to place your order. Our class code is HB4N7. You will need to enter that to place your order. I will be submitting the order on Friday December 5th!! I usually will give you a little more time but the holidays are giving us a little less wiggle room this month.

Look for more information to come soon!

Chris Van Allsburg

Mrs. Sarjeant and I had the pleasure of meeting Chris Van Allsburg this week. He was in town promoting his new book The Misadventures of Sweetie Pie. We got to hear him speak about how he became an author and illustrator. This is exciting and timely because we will be spending the month of December participating in an author study on Mr. Van Allsburg's works. This was very special for me on a personal level because he is my favorite author! What a fun evening!

The big moment...we tried to hide our excitement!

I can't wait to share everything I learned about the author with the second graders next week.

Work in progress...

Hello Second Grade Families,
Welcome to my new blog! It is currently under construction and will be workable soon!
Happy Thanksgiving,
Mrs. G
