Thanksgiving News 11-24-15

Happy Thanksgiving!
I hope you have a relaxing and restful Thanksgiving with your family. I look forward to spending some extra time with my loved ones.

Yesterday, I sent home an optional Thanksgiving homework assignment. It is an interview sheet for your child to use with a family member from a different generation. I look forward to sharing these with the class when we return and learning about family traditions.

I would like to invite parents to volunteer in our classroom on Wednesday and Friday mornings. This will be a time to do odd jobs to help TEAM 2 or work with students. A sign up sheet will be available soon. If you have another day of the week/time that works better for your schedule and the desire to volunteer, please let me know!

Important Dates:

On Thursday December 10th we will swim for the first time. Our session is from 12:20-1:20. Please let me know if you are available to chaperone the boys or girls locker room and swimming session.
The sign up is located HERE.

Later on the 10th we will visit the annual Wealthy Flea Market. Students are welcome to bring up to $5 in quarters to shop from the 4th graders.

On Friday December 11th we will walk to Clark Home for our first visit with the residents. We will leave Wealthy around 9:40 and return just before lunch. Please let me know if you would like to walk with us. We always love to have parents join us for this special program.

On December 17th we will have our class holiday party. It will be from 1-2 pm. Following recess, we will go to Pioneer for the Wealthy Holiday concert around 2:30 pm.

December 18th will be PJ day. We will have a special TEAM 2 get-together and will enjoy an assembly in the afternoon.

See below for a note from the room moms:
Hello,
The library will be reopening the week of Dec 7.  Mrs. Goodman’s class will be going on Fridays from 10:30-11am.  If any one is available to volunteer during that time (every week, every other week, or even once a month), your help would be greatly appreciated.  Please let me know if you are interested & your availability, and I can inform the Learning Commons coordinators.
There is Volunteer Training on Tuesday Dec 1 from 8:30-9am OR 2:45-3:15pm in the Learning Commons.  Trish Reid will be teaching/reviewing the check-out/check-in and shelving processes and also sharing some best practice guidelines with our group. Please let me know if you have any questions.

Thank you,
Kim Carnevale

Next week we will only have school on Monday and Tuesday. I hope you all have a wonderful Thanksgiving with family and friends. Safe travels!

This week in second grade:

In reading we learned that good readers ask questions as they read. This week we focused on informational text. We read 5 books from the exciting Who Would Win series by Jerry Pallotta. The kids had fun guessing which animal would win and we learned a lot of cool facts!

In writing we worked on opinion writing. Look for a few persuasive turkey related pieces to come home this weekend.

In math we learned strategies to help with 2-digit addition. Take some time this weekend to do some fact practice with flash cards, IXL, or another website.

In social studies we learned about map skills. We learned how to use a compass rose. We discovered what continent, country, state, city, and neighborhood we live in.

Student Leadership Team Updates
Our Student Leadership Team has organized a school-wide service learning project. Together as a school, we are creating Supper Packs for Kid’s Food Basket. These packs are passed out to area schools to ensure that every child goes home to a nutritious dinner. In Addition to the Supper Pack, a fresh fruit, vegetable and protein source are included in each Sack Supper. We are asking each child to donate one of the following items:  individual fruit cups, juice boxes (100% juice, please), small boxes of raisins, granola bars, or  plastic bags. I may follow up with further requests depending on the number of bags we are able to fill and the remaining items.  There will be a designated spot in our classroom to collect these items, so feel free to send them in anytime. Our last collection day will be Friday, December 4. Thank you for your support!

Happy (early) Weekend!

We have had another wonderful week in second grade. Thank you to everyone for making time to meet with me during our fall conference. I love sharing all of the wonderful things we are doing in class with you and celebrating your child's success stories. Keep up the great work, parents!

At many of the conferences we discussed ways to increase student fact fluency with basic addition and subtraction facts. A fun way to do this is to use IXL https://www.ixl.com/math/grade-2 section E.
Each child has this login info...

Today your child is coming home with a blank turkey. It is your family's job to disguise the turkey to save him from being eaten on Thanksgiving. This is a great time to show creativity, the sky is the limit! Your turkey could be anything...use items you have around the house to disguise him and return on Monday. Can't wait to see what you do!
Some ideas...

Thank you for working so hard on your beautiful feathers for Turkey Tom. He looks great!

This week in second grade:

In reading we learned that good readers ask questions before, during, and after reading a text.  We recorded our questioning in our reading response notebooks. We also practiced responding in a post on our class Kid Blog. Check it out (password is goodman) https://kidblog.org/class/mrs-goodmans-class3/login

We loved reading Mercy Watson to the Rescue to practice our questioning strategies. What a silly book!

In writing we began our unit on opinion writing. We will be reviewing books, restaurants, and other things. We will learn to express our own opinions in writing.

In math we ROCKED the Chapter 3 assessment and began to work on Chapter 4. We will be learning about more strategies to add and subtract numbers. If you ever want to check out what we are doing in class, you are welcome to visit the online edition of our student textbook.

If you are stumped on homework and want to watch a video of an example problem for any of the lessons you can view a Math on the Spot video. Your second grader can help you navigate!

In  social studies we learned about map skills. We used Google Earth to find our addresses and fun places around the world like Disney World and the Eiffel Towel. We looked at maps of Michigan and found different locations and paid attention to the map key.

Friday News 11-6-15

Hello Second Grade Families,

Thank you to all who came out for conferences last night. I look forward to meeting with the rest of you on Tuesday. It is so important to take the time to meet and make sure we are working together in the best way possible to support each student. I am proud to stand with parents as an advocate for each child.

This week you received a family feather. Please find a little time this weekend to work on decorating the feather together. Yours will be joined with the other students' to complete our class turkey, Tom. Feathers are due Monday.

There will be no school on Friday November 13th.

The November book orders were sent home today. Please return the forms by next Thursday! If you would like me to set aside some books for holiday gifts, just let me know!!

This week in second grade:

In reading we paid attention to story structure. We charted the beginning, middle, and end of many stories. We wrote about how characters changed throughout the story. We posted on our class kid blog.

In writing we fixed up and fancied up our personal narrative stories. We have worked so hard throughout this unit and have grown as writers. I was so proud to hear a student say "my favorite thing about second grade is being an author."

Wednesday was far too beautiful to sit inside and write.

In math we worked with groups of numbers in rows and columns (shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, multiplication) and wrote repeated addition facts. Have your child draw an array for you and tell you the facts he/she knows.
Example:

XXXX
XXXX
XXXX

4+4+4 or 4x3

This weekend your second grader is coming home with the Chapter 3 review that we completed in class today. Review this with your child this weekend to help prepare for Monday's test. Ask your child about our super fun review today!

If for some reason the review doesn't make it home today, check out this link to the digital edition of our student math book...
https://www-k6.thinkcentral.com/content/hsp/math/gomath2015/na/gr2/student_edition_ebook_9780544348806_/html5/index.html

The review for Chapter 3 begins on page 229.

In social studies we  learned that communities change when people move into or out of a community for various reasons. Many students shared personal stories of family moves.

A belated Happy Halloween from Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band:)

Have a great weekend!
