Friday News 10-2-15

Happy Weekend!

We had a fun filled week in second grade. I hope everyone is ready for a fabulous weekend, I know I am! If you are checking out Art Prize with the kids, send pictures my way. We will not have an opportunity to take a field trip to Art Prize this year, but I would still love to bring a bit of the art into our classroom.

Next Wednesday we will take our first field trip to Sietsema Orchards. Thank you to all who have volunteered to drive. We will meet outside of room 201 at 12:20 and hope to depart Wealthy by 12:30 pm. We will leave the orchard around 2:30 and hope to return to Wealthy by 3:00pm.

We will take our second field trip to Blandford Nature Center in the afternoon on Friday October 23rd. A volunteer sign up sheet will be coming to your email inbox soon.

To help fund these two trips, please make sure you've sent in your child's $20 activity fee. Thank you!

This week in second grade:

This week in reading we learned that the setting is the time and the place where a story happens. It can be inside or outside and can change throughout a story. We also learned about problem and solution. We did a fun extra activity where we learned to draw Arthur...ask your child to show you how to do this!

This week in writing we brought our stories to life by adding action, setting, talk, and the things characters were thinking or feeling.

This week in math we learned about place value within three digit numbers. We also used the Go Math website on the chrome books as a tool to help us with our Friday math lesson. So fun!

This week in science we planted seeds in baggie gardens. We wanted a way to see what is happening to a seed under the soil. So far we have a few that are growing pretty well!

We have a bit of growth in our experiment plants with one that is being "watered" with juice!

Our control plants are slow growing in our classroom that does not get direct sunlight.

This week in social studies we created our own communities with different places to live, work, and play. We presented our communities to the class and worked on speaking skills.

We began to look at the history of East Grand Rapids. We were so excited to learn that there used to be an AMUSEMENT park (Ramona Park) where D&W is currently located. There was a roller coaster named the Jack Rabbit Derby Racer. Everyone agrees that we wish it was still here!

I hope you all have a nice weekend!
Take care,
SG
