Friday News--last one of the year!

Dear Second Grade Families,
I can't believe this is our last Friday News post. This year has passed so quickly for me. I have had such a great time getting to know and teaching your children. I see wonderful things in the future for each and every child. Thank you for the privilege of allowing me to teach your child. I hope you have a fun and safe summer.
Today we had a visit from a representative of the EGR KDL branch. She signed up all second graders for the summer reading program and showed us the cool prizes each child has the opportunity to earn. We also got to hear about some of the awesome programs that the library will feature this summer. I hope you visit your local KDL branch and take advantage of the wonderful offerings. Maybe I will see you there! :)

I look forward to seeing you all at the Second Grade Family Picnic at Manhattan Park on June 3rd at 11:30. Unless you have signed up as a driver, you do not need to come to Wealthy. Please meet us at the park. Your child will be assigned to a driver who will take students to and from the picnic. This helps me keep track of all students and ensure safety. If you would like to take your child home from the picnic, you will be required to return to Wealthy and sign out your child in the office.

Please remember to pack a picnic lunch for your child (and yourself). You may also want to bring a picnic blanket and any games or activities your family likes to play.  All family members are invited, even little siblings! We will eat near the pavilion when we arrive and then spend the rest of the time playing on the equipment, enjoying games of kickball, and competing with other classes in tug of war.

We have no scheduled rain date, so please plan on eating lunch in the hallway on the second floor if there is inclement weather.

Traditionally, we have attendance from all families. I hope to see each and every one of you to celebrate a successful second grade year!

This week we wrote circular "reminds me" poems. We wrote the poems on big chart paper and added illustrations. Each child presented a poem to the class. Very well done!
We have been hard at work adding to our poetry google documents. We are planning on publishing next week and sending home the books with students.

Thank you to Jake's step-dad for reading to us today!

Weekend News 5-15-15

Hello Second Grade Families,

What an exciting week we've had. I hope everyone had a blast at Family Fun Night last night. We are so very thankful for any contribution that you made to the Wizard Walk fundraiser. I am in shock that over $35,000 was raised. Wow. What an incredible commitment you've made to Wealthy. THANK YOU for all that you do for your children and our wonderful school.

The second graders did a great job singing at Clark Home on Tuesday. It was so sweet to see the faces of the residents as they watched the kids and sang along. What a special partnership we have. Check out the blog post from Tuesday for videos of this performance.

Please let me know if you are able to volunteer as a driver for our 2nd Grade Picnic on June 3rd. So far I have had two parents volunteer! Thank you!

This week in second grade:

In reading we had "follow your dreams" week. We read books about kids who had big dreams and goals for their lives. We wrote "Someday" books about what we hope to do when we grow up and what we are doing today to prepare.  Look for this book to come home tonight.

Rory's dream:

Jack's dream:

In writing we wrote poetry and included similes. We tried to stretch out a comparison throughout an entire poem. We are each working on a google doc of all of the poems we have written during this unit. We hope to create a class anthology of our poetry.

In math we are working on getting ready for third grade. This week we focused on estimation. We learned how to round to the nearest ten and hundred. We added and subtracted numbers to find our estimates. We learned that when a story problem says "about", it is asking us to estimate- not find the exact answer.

In science we created landforms out of sand in our communities. We wrote about how the different landforms are alike and different. We also used water drops to simulate rain and observed what happens when rain falls of landforms. We learned what erosion means and observed how it changes land.

Thank you to Jack's mom for being our Mystery Reader! Those baby animals were SO cute!

Having a blast at TEAM 2 Cheer practice!

Friday News

Wow! You really know how to make a teacher feel appreciated! What a thoughtful group of kids and parents. I am thankful for each of you. Thank you for making my week so special. The "Wealthywood" themed classroom door, the flowers, "fan mail", award, and luncheon were simply wonderful. I feel fortunate to work in such a giving community.

The flowers look perfect on my front porch!

THANK YOU!!

On Tuesday morning around 9:40, we will leave for Clark Home for our end of year performance. We would love to have you walk with us. If you are available, let me know!

The Wizard Walk will be Thursday May 14th. Later that same evening will be Family Fun Night! Don't miss the excitement.

Thank you to Emmett's grandparents for being our Mystery Reader today!

Have a wonderful weekend!
