Friday News 3-27-15

Thank you to all parents who attended your child's Thursday conference. It is so nice to have those 15 minutes to chat about your wonderful children. Thank you for making your child's education such a big priority and thank you for taking the time to come speak with me.

We had a fun field trip this afternoon to the Grand Rapids Public Museum. We visited the Old Grand Rapids exhibit to enrich our social studies curriculum. We saw how the Grand Rapids community has changed over time.

Next week we will be having a beach themed read-in on Thursday April 2 from 1-2pm. Please send your child with school-appropriate beach attire.

We will be enjoying a presentation called Bing, Bang, Boom with Professor Gizmo on Thursday April 2 at 2:20.
This week in second grade:
In reading this week we learned about non-fiction text features. Students worked with their reading group to create a poster that gave examples of many text features. The groups enjoyed presenting their posters to the class.

This week in math students created a survey and gave it to all of the students in the class. After the data was collected, students graphed their results using a bar graph and a picto-graph. Check out the students' hard work the next time you visit--it is hanging outside of our classroom!

In writing this week we worked on adding capitalization and punctuation to our writing, We are also focusing on making sure we write in complete sentences.

In social studies this week we  learned how San Francisco changed over time. We learned about miners who traveled to the city in hopes of finding gold. We learned about the earthquake and heard a realistic simulation of what it sounded like. We had a blast on our field trip learning how GR has changed over time.

Thank you to Addi's dad for being our Mystery Reader today!

Friday News 3-20-15

Spring is here! I hope everyone has had a great week.

We visited the 5th graders' Math Fair this afternoon and enjoyed hearing about some cool things they've learned this year.

We also had a fun visit with our reading buddies. They worked with us on ways to create google docs and learned how to share a doc with the teacher. It was so nice to learn about technology from our 4th grade friends!

We are in need of a few more containers of wipes and kleenex to get us to the end of the school year. If you have any extra around the house, we would appreciate if you could send them our way!

Next Friday we will be taking a field trip to the Grand Rapids Public Museum. Please send your child to school with a booster seat if they are under 8 years old.

I look forward to seeing all parents at conferences on March 26th or 31st. Please shoot me an email if you are unsure of your conference time. I can't wait to share your child's progress and success in second grade!

This week in second grade:

In reading this week we learned about fables. We know that fables usually have an animal as the main character and always teach a lesson. The lesson is called the moral of the story. Ask your child to tell you about some of the fables we read this week and see if they can remember the moral.
In math this week we completed our unit on measurement. We began a new unit on data and graphing. Spend a moment this weekend with your second grader looking for a graph in the newspaper or a magazine. I would love it if your child could bring in a graph to share with the class.
We learned that picto-graphs have a key that tells you how many voters each picture represents.

In writing this week we met with our writing partners to plan our new information books. We helped each other come up with ideas and organize our thoughts. Hopefully your child has shared with you what he or she is writing about. Look for the books to come home soon!

In science we completed our unit on measurement and took the unit assessment. Everyone did a great job!

Thank you to Finn's mom for being our incognito Mystery Reader today! We loved the disguise:) Great job!
